Fees and Insurance

Most psychotherapy services in Kansas are covered by health insurance or count toward deductible...

Family Psychological Services directly bills Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United, Cigna and Ambetter. However, our panel of United and Cigna providers is very limited. We also have a small panel of providers who see children and teens on KanCare. Please contact your health insurance providers to find out the details of your coverage. Copay, deductible, coinsurance, and any other services not covered by your insurance must be paid at time of service using a credit card posted in your file. Due to restrictive Medicare billing policies and auditing procedures, we only serve Medicare patients who are within our scope of practice on an "opt-out" cash-only basis at our usual and customary rate.

We strongly urge you to click below to learn more about insurance and the fee structure at FPS.

Children Are Not Immune From Mental Health Concerns...

We sometimes forget that elementary and middle school children are susceptible to psychological turmoil, particularly in times of stress or if a family member also has a mental health diagnosis. It takes extra training and experience to work with younger children. Adrian Zelvy, Tamara Henley, and Susan Chase have the credentials to help families and children cope with anxiety, depression, ADHD, oppositional behavior, and other concerns.

Helping Children Cope

Childproof Your Divorce...

Many parties rightly worry about the impact divorce will have on children and teens. But the research suggests that a well-executed, low-conflict divorce is generally superior to a hostile, loveless marriage. The trick is getting from a broken marriage to a divorce your children can trust and respect. If you're willing to do the hard work, our staff can guide divorced or divorcing parents toward a higher ground in the best interests of their children.

Divorce doesn't have to be a conflict between two factions that the child can never win and children don't have to be deeply afflicted by the dissolution of a marriage. Learn how to bring to the table the best of what each parent has to offer.

Children's Bill of Rights*

Children going through a divorce and custody process have the right to:

• Love and be loved by both of your parents without feeling guilt or disapproval.
• Not be forced to choose one parent over the other.
• Age appropriate answers to questions about the changing family relationships, without placing blame on either parent.
• Experience regular, consistent, and flexible shared parenting time with both parents without interference.
• Not be put in the middle of parental battles or used as messengers.
• Know that their parents decision to divorce is not their fault.
• Have a secure relationship, express love and affection for, and receive love and affection from both parents.
• Be protected from hearing degrading or negative comments about either parent.

Co-Parenting Consultation and Custody Evaluation

Co-parenting Consultation: Changing Children's Experience of Divorce, Two Parents at a Time...

Parents who are separated or divorced, or who are in the process of splitting up, may benefit from co-parent consultations. Specific treatment goals vary according to individual needs but generally focus on reaching agreements on parenting time and child management, joint decision-making, communication, and any other issues that create stress and conflict.

Do you find yourself or your co-parent:

• Using the legal system to fight with or degrade one another.
• Making children messengers or asking them to spy on the other parent.
• Placing children in the middle of adult conflict.
• Observing your children trying to intervene in parent disputes, or in some cases, make those disputes worse.
• Failing to manage depression or anxiety or express emotional reactivity to your children.
• Relying on children for emotional support or major responsibilities during the divorce process

Co-parenting consultation may help parents resolve some of their anger or grief related to the ending of the relationship allowing both to focus more fully on parenting without the intrusion of “unfinished business” from the past. Most of our staff accept co-parenting cases, depending on the age of the child and the specific need. However, Adrian Zelvy, LCPC is coordinating the program and engaging most of our new referrals. Mr. Zelvy has extensive experience working with divorced families and is currently training in parent coordination in divorce. Additionally, Wes Crenshaw, PHD ABPP owns Family Psychological Services and has received numerous hours of continuing education in forensic psychology, divorce, and custody. He consults regularly with Mr. Zelvy.

Health insurance and KanCare (Medicaid) rarely pay for any aspect of co-parenting therapy. Exceptions may include cases in which a child (a) has an existing mental health diagnosis, and (b) co-parenting therapy can be shown to be medically necessary to address that need, and (c) the carrier will reimburse a 90846 code, (psychotherapy without client present) as part of treatment. Costs for co parenting therapy run $120 per hour and $150 for ninety minutes with costs shared between the parties as apportioned by the court.

We recognize that other providers and practices take a different view and may attempt to bill co-parenting services to insurance. Unless the above criteria are met, those claims are subject to recoupment under “waste, fraud, and abuse” clauses. Adrian Zelvy and Carrie Poe can review cases to make a final determination about potential insurance reimbursement, but parties should not expect insurance to cover this service. On the rare occasions when insurance will reimburse, parties should expect to cover a number of costs for consultation outside of reimbursable expenses including reports, email, testimony, consultation with attorneys, etc.

Witness Fees. Fees for any staff person at Family Psychological Services to testify in any forensic case must be paid prior to the court hearing to which he or she is called. In a custody evaluation, purchasing witness time does not imply that Dr. Crenshaw will be testifying for the person who calls him. Dr. Crenshaw remains the court's expert regardless of who pays the witness fees.
